A child vacuuming a sunny apartment living room with a radiator under the window — the first job on any fall deep cleaning checklist

Fall Deep Cleaning Checklist for Your NYC Apartment

Most of the fall deep cleaning checklist advice online was written for a suburban house with a garage, a mudroom and a yard — not a 600-square-foot apartment where the radiator doubles as a shelf. So here is the short answer first: a fall deep clean in NYC is really about three things. Get the summer's dust out before the windows seal for the months ahead. Clear the radiators, baseboards and vents before the heat comes on. And reset the kitchen and bathroom before holiday hosting starts. This checklist covers all three, room by room, in the same order our own teams work through apartments across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

What belongs on a fall deep cleaning checklist for a NYC apartment?

A real fall checklist is a regular deep clean plus the seasonal items that only matter once a year — the heating, the windows and the closet changeover. Work top to bottom in each room so dust falls onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet:

  • Kitchen: inside the oven and the range-hood filter (a summer of cooking leaves a grease film that smells the first time you really use the oven in October), behind and under the fridge including the coils, inside cabinet fronts and handles, the top of the fridge and any above-cabinet gap, and a full degrease of the backsplash.

  • Bathroom: scrub grout and caulk lines, descale the showerhead and faucets, dust the exhaust-fan cover (it works harder once windows stay shut), and wash or replace the shower-curtain liner.

  • Living room and bedrooms: radiators and baseboards front to back (see the next section before you skip this), window tracks and interior glass, blinds and washable curtains, light fixtures and ceiling-fan blades, under the bed and behind furniture, and a vacuum of the mattress and upholstery.

  • The seasonal changeover: summer clothes washed and stored, winter coats and bedding down from the top shelf and aired out, and the entry closet reset for wet shoes and umbrellas.

  • Safety, while you are at it: test the smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors — you will be sealing the apartment and running heat within weeks, which is exactly when both matter most.

If that list looks familiar, it should: it is the same detailed checklist approach our deep cleaning in NYC teams follow on every visit, with the fall items folded in.

Why deep clean before the heat comes on?

Because once the heat is on, everything you skipped gets baked into the air you breathe until spring. New York's official heat season runs October 1 through May 31 — the period when building owners are legally required to provide heat — and the first time a radiator kicks on after months of sitting idle, the dust layered on top of it burns off. That faint scorched smell every New Yorker knows is last season's dust, and it lands on every surface you just cleaned.

The windows are the other half of it. From roughly October to April a NYC apartment stays sealed, so whatever is in the air stays in the air. Dust, pet dander and pollen settle on floors and soft furnishings and get stirred back up every time someone crosses the room — and keeping them under control is one of the practical steps the EPA recommends for improving indoor air quality. A deep clean in early fall means you start the sealed-window months at zero instead of carrying a whole summer with you.

Which spots does a fall checklist usually miss?

The same five, in apartment after apartment:

  • The radiator itself. Not just the top — between the fins and behind it, where a full season of dust mats together. A radiator brush or a vacuum crevice tool earns its keep here exactly once a year.

  • Window tracks and sills. They collect a summer of city grime and dead insects, and they are about to be locked shut against the cold for months.

  • Behind the fridge and its coils. Dusty coils make the fridge work harder through the holidays, and the gap behind it is where dust bunnies go to multiply.

  • The tops of things. The fridge, kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, door frames — dust settles where you never look, and pre-war apartments with high ceilings collect more of it than you would believe.

  • The entry zone. Doormat, shoe tray, coat closet. Fall in New York means rain, then slush, then salt — set the entryway up for it now instead of mopping around a pile of sneakers in January.

Should you do a fall deep clean yourself or book one?

Honestly, it depends on three things: how big the apartment is, how long since the last real deep clean, and how much of next weekend you want back. A studio that was deep cleaned in spring is a solid DIY Saturday with this checklist. A two-bedroom that has not had one all year is a different proposition — the oven alone can take an hour, and the behind-the-fridge, between-the-radiator-fins work is exactly the kind that gets abandoned halfway through.

There is no wrong answer, only an honest one. If you book it out, one thing worth asking any company is which products they will use in your home. At Superb Maids NYC our teams work with eco-friendly products by default — but here is the reality of cleaning homes across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens: most of our clients ask us to work with the supplies they already have at home, and we are glad to. If there is a product you don't like, tell us once and it stays out of your home, and we confirm products with you before your visit rather than guessing on arrival.

When should you book a fall deep clean in NYC?

October is the sweet spot. Early enough to beat the first radiator burn-off, and well ahead of the pre-holiday rush — late November and December are some of the busiest weeks of the year for bookings, because everyone is hosting someone. Book in October and your apartment goes into the sealed-window season, the holidays and the new year already reset.

And a fall deep clean is the natural starting point for the months after it: a recurring cleaning plan — weekly, bi-weekly or monthly — keeps the sealed-window dust from ever rebuilding, so next fall's deep clean is a light one. If you want the reset done before the heat is on for good, you can book a cleaning online in under a minute — and tell us your product preferences before we ever ring the bell.
